Yongzhou Theater 永洲大戲院

Qijin or Cijin District 旗津區, Kaohsiung is a small island just next to Kaohsiung. It is now an island but it used to be a peninsula so some older people don’t even consider it an island, but it is now.

It is now a quick day trip get-a-way from the hustle and bustle of the Kaohsiung mainland. It’s a quick MRT ride and then a couple minute ferry trip away from Kaohsiung. Or you can easily bike there as I do. There are lots of seafood restaurants, shopping, beach fun, sunsets and of course an old mostly abandoned theater.

Cijin is a narrow but densely populated island, so the theater, Yangzhou Theater 永洲大戲院 was built at the far, far end of the island. There isn’t much on-line about the theater, but I read that it was built in 1953. It was originally called Zhongzhou Theater 中洲戲院. It changed it’s name at some point to Yongzhou. It closed in 1987.

Not much left inside.

I go to Cijin often. I love to bike down, then rent a bike and bike around and check out what I can see in Kaohsiung’s oldest area. And since the theater is at the far end of the island, it’s a great endpoint before I hit the beach.

Upstairs

The screen is still there, but not much else theater stuff.

It’s not the most beautiful theater but it’s still amazing that Cijin used to have one. If you have seen this blog before you will know what probably happened to it.

秀舞歌華豪- Dance show cabaret-style shows were a big part of these old theaters too. And of course, they had then at the theater on Cijin. Pretty much the only thing on-line I can find about the theater is this old picture that was put in a Facebook group(就是愛旗津 Just Love Cijin) for one of these shows.

It’s a little hard to get into, but you don’t really have to. You can see everything important to see through the windows on the side.

The theater is tucked down a little alley at the far end of the populated area of the island. You can’t really see it from the road but if you google, 永洲大戲院 , you can find it. It’s a cool area of Cijin and a side of the island few people go to. But I highly recommend walking/biking around there and seeing all the cool alleys and old houses.

So if you’re going for a day trip away to Cijin, why not stop by the area and check out the theater, and say hi!

      1. Not really as much as Japan, just because of the size of the country. But there is definitely are rust belt/end of the boom times areas in Taiwan. Much like most developed countries. There is a small but pretty healthy Taiwanese urbex community.
