Guomao Community: Kaohsiung’s Little Hong Kong

One of the most unique neighborhoods in Kaohsiung is Guomao Community 果貿社區. It is located in Zuoying District 左營區, close to the navy base. The navy set up 25 military dependents’ villages in Zuoying. Guomao was also one of Taiwan’s largest military dependents’ villages.

In the mid-1980s, the villagers were relocated to 13 more modern buildings, which are now the Guomao Community we know and love today.

The community is lovingly called Little Hong Kong. It has many restaurants, salons, markets, and everything a community needs. There is also a flea market on weekend mornings, so that’s a good time to visit.

The biggest feature of the Guomao Community is the two semicircular, arc-shaped buildings, Buildings 8 and 9. These two buildings form a concentric circle. In the middle of these two buildings is a small park. Even now, this park remains one of Kaohsiung’s most well-known spots for Instagram and photos. Most weekends, people will be in the park taking pictures.

The famous park.
Maybe the most photographed slide in Kaohsiung.

Bubble fun.

Look up, way up.

In the fall of 2024, I made a few trips to some of the rooftops. Fortunately for me, there were a few doors open. I quietly walked up the stairs to the top. I made it to the roof of building number 8. So, I could get a few pictures of building number 9 and the park.

In 2025, I made it up building 9. So the next few pictures are from that trip.

Here are some more pictures of the Guomao Community from my rooftop trips.

The elevator would have been easier, but there were lots of things to see along the way. Many people had gates in front of their front doors.

The rooftops mostly look like this.

Buildings 8 and 9 are the coolest in the community if not all of Kaohsiung.

There are a couple areas of Guomao that I will add to this post over the following year. So come back often.

Guomao is pretty easy to get to. I recommend going on weekend mornings to check out the flea market. But anytime is good. So bring your camera and a good appetite and say Hi! to Kaohsiung’s little Hong Kong.
