Qiumao Garden (秋茂園) is one of Taiwan’s most unusual parks that you can visit. It is located in Xinpu Village, Miaoli County. I wouldn’t go all the way just for the park, but if you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Mr. Huang Qiumao was born in 1921 in Tainan. He grew up poor. He was a good student, who worked his way through school. After school, he moved to Japan. While in Japan, he became a very successful businessman.
His generosity began in Japan. However, in 1972, Japan changed its diplomatic relations with the ROC to the CCP. Dr. Huang was so angry that he returned to Taiwan and resumed his philanthropy there.
Work on this park began in 1974, and it opened in 1975. It’s filled with many statues, buildings, pavilions, and slides. It’s hard to describe all the statues. They really need to be seen.

Unfortunately, Dr. Huang’s mother died while he was young. So this statue is him taking his mom all around the world.

These are two of the more famous statues. Many statues are from old Chinese legends, animals, and other well-known stories.
These are two of the most famous statues in the park. I am not sure what story or legend they are, though. If you do recognize them, let me know.

There are a few temples in the park.

There are also some churches.

I won’t share all the statues. You really should see them all for yourselves.

The garden is right next to Xinpu train station. If you don’t go to the park by train, then don’t forget to check out the train station.

If you want to read more about the train station and other old Japanese-era train stations in this area of Taiwan, then you can click on this post. It’s a great article.
It’s a remote area of Taiwan, but there is much to see and enjoy around here. So, if you’re driving around Miaoli’s windswept coast, stop by the garden and say hi!
Thank you. I’ve been gone from Taiwan for 6 years now, after residing there for 39 and becoming a citizen. About the only thing that draws me back any more is to vote for president. Thank you for keeping me connected.
